Inspiration
Two photos I took in when leaving home
Being a person who finds it difficult to express myself verbally, there were moments in my life that I felt strong emotions but was unable to speak them out--like the moment captured in these two photos. So I was wondering--If I could re-enter these memories, can I find other ways to release the unspoken words?
Concept
Design
I created a unique cel shader in Unreal Engine to make the scenes feel like memories or dreams.
Interaction
01
Hand tracking with IK arms
I combined Oculus hand tracking with inverse kinematics for the arms to create a more realistic experience.
02
Drawing on a foggy window
I implemented a Line Trace from the user's index finger to the window to determine the drawing position. When the user is drawing, a white path is drawn on a black Render Target during runtime, which then acts as a mask in the custom shader applied to the window.
03
Holding hands
When the audience hold hands with the character inside VR, I will also their hands in the real world, providing a warm haptic feedback.
04
Keeping the memory
What the audience draws on the window will be displayed at the final scene. It will also be automatically saved as a screenshot.
00:00 was exhibited at ITP Winter Show and attracted many viewers. I was deeply moved and satisfied when the participants shared similar experiences and feelings with me after the experience. This experience made me realize the potential and power of immersive storytelling, as well as the depth of human emotions and connections.
